So, basically Rik Cordero asked me, Hustle Crow, to be his Bentley Fonzworth or in other words entertain all of yall while he gets to look all cool and shit with his famous ass rapper friends. I obliged, cause yo, I’m thinkin maybe I can spin off a record deal with Yeezy and a show on MTV like that tap dancing mother fucker did. Anyway, I said to Rik, “So Mr. Artsy Video Fucker, how do you want me to entertain these online sons-a-bitches?” and he says “Hustle, do you my dude! Each week I will send you some Three/21 videos, both old and new and you just write what you think.” I thought about it for a while and eventually came to the conclusion that I literally have nothing better to do since shitting on cars has started to lose its novelty.
Now here is the real kicker, for the first video “Shake Up” by Kilsy. Rik fucking sends me what I initially think are outtakes from an old season of The Real World, but turns out to be an actual video that Rik shot for some cute singer (in a Katy Perry way) named Kilsy, not to be confused with Kinsey that creepy dude that studied sex in the 40’s. This video truly looks like MTV asked Rik to direct an episode of The Real World Williamsburg, but Rik and his Three/21 team fucked around and got everyone high on ecstasy including themselves.
One thing that is clearly amazing about this video is the bird’s eye camera angle that seems to bob up and down over the crowd. It was at this time during the video that things became oddly familiar to me, since this is generally the perspective from which I see things. Another thing I happened to see is that a common line in this song is “ohh how it feels” and to me this video “feels” like Rik Cordero captured a hipster aesthetic in ’05 before motherfuckers even knew they were hipsters. Once again Rik shows his visionary ability, even though its somewhat masked by all the sweaty Levi’s clad people gyrating about while transparently showing viewers that they are nervously counting the beat in their heads. Ohh wait, isn’t that what most white people call dancing?
